Epsom Heritage Walk: Lava, Homes & History

  • Epsom Community Centre 202 Gillies Avenue Auckland, Auckland, 1023 New Zealand (map)

Discover Epsom’s heritage: lava-formed landscape, grand homes, landmark buildings, and Arts and Crafts influences, guided by architect Cristina Capri. Discover Epsom’s distinctive character on a guided architectural walk shaped by a 15,000-year-old lava flow, much of it still untouched.

Recognised in 1981, the area retains large properties and a sense of openness. Long home to leaders and creative personalities, it includes works by architect William Gummer. Explore landmark sites such as Firth Castle, Auckland Grammar School, and the former hospital, alongside gracious homes set in lush gardens with dry-stone walls.

The walk also highlights the Arts and Crafts influence in New Zealand, led by architect and heritage specialist Cristina Capri.

  • Meet your guide at the corner of Mountain and Seccombes Roads, Epsom

  • Cost: $5 per person

  • The walk requires a medium level of fitness, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

  • Suitable for ages 9+

  • Bookings are required
